The award honors organizations that have created effective workplaces based on six evidence-based components that are linked with positive employee and employer outcomes: autonomy, work/life fit, supervisor support for work success, satisfaction with earnings, benefits and opportunities for advancement, opportunities for learning and a culture of trust.
Sisu, which offers IT services for healthcare facilities with a focus on community and rural healthcare organizations, is one of 17 companies in Minnesota to receive this honor.
“Sisu focuses on helping rural health organizations—and their surrounding communities—thrive,” said Scott Lee, CEO of Sisu. “That dedication to community extends to our workplace community here at Sisu. We’re pleased to be able to offer our staff the flexible, yet challenging work environment they need to excel.”
Sisu offers its employees several options to tailor their work environments, including flexible hours, scheduled telecommuting, compressed work weeks and a leave policy that allows employees to attend family functions at their discretion. Additionally, managers are specifically trained on strategies for effectively supervising remote employees.
“It’s a very family-friendly work environment,” commented Hilary McCausland, Director of Human Resources at Sisu. “It’s also a dog-friendly one. We have managers who keep dog treats on their desks for these canine visitors. Our flexible, casual work environment has created a real sense of togetherness—of family.”
It’s also helped Sisu continue to recruit in a competitive job market. Between 2010 and 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs in the health care sector are projected to grow by 30%, more than twice as fast as the general economy. An additional study from Industrial Relations: A Journal of Economy and Society reported a 400% increase in health IT job listings as a percentage of all healthcare job postings.
“We believe that our employees are our greatest asset, and I believe our workplace perks give us a recruiting edge over other companies,” added McCausland. “So many candidates I speak with are looking for both flexibility and work-life balance. The Sisu environment stands out by providing both.”
“Sisu is a very family- and community-focused company,” commented Brandon Zapp, Infrastructure Engineer at Sisu. “Not only does Sisu support me in my career development but also ensures I maintain a positive work/family balance by giving me the flexibility I need as an active parent.”
